Northcott Supported Internships

NSI’s Vision – To provide young people (from aged 16-25 with an EHCP) the opportunity to gain meaningful employment through work experience and supported internships. Our vision is also one of growth but ensuring a balance between: continuing our young people’s education: and working in partnership with large industries and small businesses to create a much wider range of employment opportunities.

The aims of the program are:

  • To provide young people with an EHCP a pathway to the workplace
  • To continue young people’s academic progress with Maths and English
  • To ensure each young person has a job coach who will support with job matching, job coaching and eventually job carving
  • To ensure young people get high quality work experience and internships
  • To provide bespoke supported internships and personalised learning
  • For all our young people to go on to employment or apprenticeships, or into college at a higher level due to their vocational experience and academic progress

Base

NSI are based this academic year at The Warren in Hull. This is a perfect platform for the new, revitalised program in the heart of the city centre; providing an academic base in the centre of the city and ease of access to public transport. Our students can also access the wrap-around services on offer through The Warren and chance to work in their café and record store. There are lots of potential employers surrounding the Warren and we are excited to develop these new partnerships.

Our young people have a bespoke timetable. This timetable is built around their work experience in phase one or supported internship in phase two. Our students study Maths and English, ICT, PE, Employability and Enterprise. Young people can be fast-tracked to phase two depending upon their ability and experience and readiness for employment. A normal day runs from 9.30 am until 3pm.

Selection Criteria:

  • Can access Entry Level 3 and upwards for Maths and English.
  • Have moderate learning needs (MLD)
  • Willing to continue with Maths and English in Phase 1 and Phase 2 in a ‘classroom’ and in a work place setting.
  • Readily accept adult instruction and authority in their current setting.
  • Has some experience of Independent Travel – but we will support too.
  • Has the desire to work and be work ready with support.
  • Can communicate their preferences sufficiently to help us job match.

We are willing to take young people from schools, sixth forms or colleges.  However, we are particularly keen to recruit more young people from college – who are arguably more ‘ready’ to gain experience with an employer. With the right support and guidance in place, these young people have a greater chance of gaining successful employment.

We do not want to take young people who may choose Northcott supported internships because they are not ready for college or post 16.  Northcott supported internships should not be a stop – gap until they are ready for college.
