Role of a SENCO

The role of the SENCO in schools is clearly set out in the SEND Code of Practice. The SENCO has day to day responsibility for the operation of SEN policy and the co-ordination of specific provision to support learners at SEN Support and those with an EHC Plan. By being aware of the Local Offer and working with others they will ensure that learners with SEN receive appropriate support and high quality teaching.

The SENCO will provide professional guidance to colleagues and will work closely with staff, parents and other professionals.

The key responsibilities of the SENCO

As outlined in the Code of Practice:

  • coordinating provision for learners with SEN;
  • advising on the graduated response to providing SEN support;
  • advising on the deployment of the school’s delegated budget and other resources to meet learners’ needs;
  • liaising with parents and learners with SEND;
  • liaising with early years providers, other schools, educational psychologists, health and social care professionals and independent or voluntary sector professionals;
  • liaising with potential next providers of education to ensure the learner and their parents are informed about options and there is a smooth transition;
  • being a key point of contact with external agencies, including the Local Authority;
  • working with the Head teacher and school governors to ensure that the school meets its responsibilities under the Equality Act (2010) with regard to reasonable adjustments and access arrangements;
  • ensuring that the school keeps all records of learners with SEND up to date.

There may also be the need to:

  • collate information for individual learners, including the completion of forms for EHC assessment and annual reviews of EHC plans;
  • provide training and support for teachers, teaching assistants and any other relevant adults;
  • monitor practice to ensure support is implemented and good practice is maintained;
  • write policies for the school and ensure these are adhered to and reviewed appropriately;
  • ensure that knowledge of named external professionals for the school is kept up to date;

This may seem like an enormous task but remember that you are not on your own. The SEND Code of Practice states “Teachers are responsible and accountable for the progress and development of the pupils in their class, including where pupils access support from teaching assistants or specialist staff.”

The Code of Practice also states “The SENCO has an important role to play with the Head teacher and governing body, in determining the strategic development of SEN policy and provision in the school. They will be most effective in that role if they are part of the school leadership team.”

SENCO Ongoing Professional Development

The role of SENCO is a truly rewarding one, and one in which no two days will be the same. As most schools only have one SENCO, on occasions the role can feel quite lonely, it is also common for SENCOs to report that they feel there is an expectation that you become an “expert” overnight when you step new into the role.

With the SENCO role you will regularly come across new conditions and diagnoses as well as learners who present with new challenges and who require a different approach to those you may commonly use with other learners with the same difficulties. It is therefore important to network with others in similar roles and ensure that you assign time to your own continued professional development.

As a mechanism of support many of the Multi Academy Trusts in the city have a SEND Lead and/or MAT SENCO Network Meetings. Information on these should be available within your school.

To further support SENCOs and to provide a local perspective on SEND developments the Local Authority offer six SENCO Forums across the academic year. These are held with a mixture of face to face and virtual sessions at times agreed between SENCOs and the Local Authority.

Furthermore, the Local Authority offer “New to SENCO” support which includes a series of face to face and virtual meetings across the academic year to support SENCOs in delivering their key responsibilities as set out in the SEND Code of Practice and understanding the support mechanisms within Hull.

Additionally, the Local Authority also offer wider CPD opportunities for SENCOs and other professionals in education.
