Profile of needs of learners accessing the resource base

The ASC Hub is a resource-based provision based within Kelvin Hall School. Which delivers Key Stage Education for secondary school aged children/young people who have an Educational Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and who have been identified as having communication and interaction needs, usually related to an Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) diagnosis.

We have capacity for 15 children/ young people, and some of our children/young people may be working in-line with their mainstream peers. Others may have additional learning needs and continue to make progress towards age-related attainment.

Local Authority Commissioned places are for students allocated by the Local Authority SEND Team.

Curriculum Offer

The ASC Hub is set within Kelvin Hall School and at the ASC Hub we deliver Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 curriculum with the aim for our children /young people to attend mainstream classes for practical work where appropriate (science, technology, and the arts); Everyone is encouraged to attend any classes they have an interest in.

When our ASC children/young people are not in mainstream classes, they access a broad curriculum in the Hub, which follows mainstream curriculum plans, with scaffolding to meet individual needs.

Our goal is to prepare students in Key Stage 4 to attend mainstream classes for their GCSE choice subjects; ensuring that every young person, whatever their ability, achieves their full potential through a broad and balanced curriculum, and giving them the platform they need for progression to further study or training post-16.

At the ASC Hub we have weekly life skills lessons, such as cooking and horticulture. This contributes towards a Certificate of Personal Effectiveness qualification (COPE).

There are additional opportunities for personal development and wellbeing through music participation, sports events, and reward visits. We work with a range of professionals to meet each young person’s specific individual needs.

To build social and communication skills, our young people can take part in weekly social skills lessons, discussion activities and games.

Environment

The ASC Hub is a self-contained area within a wing of the main senior school. It comprises two small, interconnected classrooms. Each room is accompanied by an attached study room. Additionally, we offer a sensory room equipped with giant beanbags, customisable lighting, and a music selection for moments of quiet reflection.

Adjacent to our facility, an outdoor area features a shelter and a picnic table for outdoor activities and relaxation.

The ASC Hub has a separate entrance, providing autonomy from the main school, though has direct accessibility to the dining hall.

In addition to participating in regular lessons within the main school, our children/young people can utilise its amenities for sports activities, access library books, and engage in cooking sessions. All of which help to develop social interaction skills.

Furthermore, many of our children/young people take pleasure in cultivating vegetables, fruits, and flowers in the school’s dedicated allotment.
